The title of my thesis "Soil acidification and vegetation changes in south Swedish forests" describes my entrance into the field of anthropogenic effects on natural ecosystems. In this and following work I have contributed to the knowledge of how deposition of nitrogen and acidifying substances has affected the soil chemistry and ground layer vegetation in deciduous forests. From these retrospective studies I continued to study in more detail if, especially, hydrogen and aluminium were toxic for understory species and which effects were found when many nutrients became less available in the acidified soils. In contrast, nitrogen has increased due to anthropogenic deposition and I study how species and ecosystems respond to this eutrophying and acidifying deposition. The uptake of ammonium, nitrate and amino acids is part of this research. A broad array of research fields interests me and, in my research group, we try to attack the problems in everything from large-scale field studies to fine-scale mechanistic interactions between organisms. Examples of other ongoing research areas are: Impact of historical land-use on soil chemistry and vegetation,   Decrease in genetic diversity due to soil acidification, Uptake and transport of Al in plants, Plant-microbial competition for nitrogen and phosphorus.
